The diverse range of tourist activities of Marbella is complemented by its first class gastronomy. Marbella and surroundings have an enormous variety of restaurants where they have managed to combine international cuisine with the typical local dishes of the area.
Walking through Marbella we can find from bars and taverns ("bodegas") in the narrow streets of the old town, to restaurants which offer us, beside excellent food, an uncomparable place to taste their dishes, in old houses with interior patios, some of them from the eighteenth century or terraces of the restaurants with views of the luxury yachts berthed in Puerto Banús.
In the culinary tradition of the area, along the beaches we find the popular "chiringuitos" (beach fish bars) where we can try the tasty "espeto de sardinas" (fresh sardines cooked on a wooden stake over a wood fire), the delicious Malagan fried fish ("fritura malagueña"), the nutritious Andalucian gazpacho, and the famous paella, always in the best mediterranean style.
Also, the most demanding gourmets can enjoy in Marbella national and international cuisine (Lebanese, Italian, Russian, Indian, among others), which are offered by the quality restaurants and hotels, some of which have the best cooks in Europe.
Proof of the exceptional gastronomic appeal of Marbella is the fact that it is the host of important culinary festivals, such as the National Festival of Gastronomy which takes place every year in the Santiago restaurant, and where the most famous national and international restauranteurs arrange to meet.
